Dieter Thomä has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland since 2000 and is currently the Max Kade Visiting Professor at the University of California at Davis. He has received fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, and the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg), Berlin, among others. Many of his books and articles deal with the intersections between aesthetics, ethics, and politics. One area of interest is the theory of narrativity (Erzähle dich selbst: Lebensgeschichte als philosophisches Problem, Beck 1998/Suhrkamp 2007), another is the theory of the Gesamtkunstwerk in opera and film (Totalität und Mitleid. Richard Wagner, Sergej Eisenstein und unsere ethisch-ästhetische Moderne, Suhrkamp, 2006). He has also published extensively on Heidegger (Die Zeit des Selbst und die Zeit danach, Suhrkamp, 1990 and Heidegger Handbuch[ed.], 2003), on the generation game, and on happiness
